Teachers in Kisii rubbish proposed amendments by TSC, calls them punitive

Gucha Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch has trashed the proposed amendments to the TSC Act, 2012 by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) terming it as punitive to teachers.

Speaking in Ogembo town, the branch Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki urged all teachers to stand against the proposal, saying that the Parliament is the only institution mandated by the 2010 Constitutionto make such changes.

“The TSC is trying to sneak their selfish projects into the Constitution and twist it to enable them to continue manipulating and intimidating teachers,” she said.

Machuki affirmed that the branch and others across the country were in full support of the decision by Union Secretary General Collins Oyuu to boycott the consultative meeting that was called by TSC.

She added that the branch’s members will also not attend the public participation sessions, saying that that would be tantamount to aiming a bullet at themselves.

The KNUT boss thanked the Court for halting the directive to pay school fees via the eCitizen platform, saying that it had no legal policy framework to govern it.

“This is an ill-timed initiative by the government because it will open other avenues of corruption which is already a bane in the other government sectors,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by the county Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Executive Secretary Joseph Abincha.

While addressing mourners at Gesonso village, Abincha appealed to the region’s MPs to stand with teachers to ensure that laws intended to disadvantage teachers do not see the light of day.

He asked TSC to stick to the laws governing them and their teachers to ensure the smooth development of education in the country.
