Teachers across the country were thrown into confusion following news that Dr Nancy Macharia had proceeded on terminal leave ahead of her official retirement at the end of this month.
On Tuesday afternoon, Education News was flooded with calls from anxious teachers seeking confirmation and clarity, particularly over the fate of the anticipated 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
This platform has reliably learned that teachers’ unions were put on the spot, with members demanding answers regarding the assurances they had received about the imminent signing of a robust agreement before Dr Macharia’s exit.
This platform is privy to the information that the teachers’ union platform demanded information on what the unions had always told them about high-notch progress that was to be signed before the exit of Dr Macharia.

In December last year, during the KEPSHA conference in Mombasa, Dr Macharia came forward. She informed the head teachers, in the presence of union officials, that her office was awaiting the union’s proposal on the 2025-2029 CBA. Most teachers who gave their views feel that they may end up having no CBA anytime soon as a result of the union’s delay in meeting TSC’s timeline.
“Just imagine the budget estimates will be read on 12th yet no formal agreement has been made between TSC and the unions,” quipped a frustrated teacher from Trans Nzoia County.
KNUT had come out during its meeting to allegedly propose a 60 per cent increment on basic salary, with all allowances capped at 30 per cent of the basic salary.
Efforts to reach top union officials of both KUPPET and KNUT for comments were unsuccessful. Yesterday, Dr Macharia began her terminal leave after serving as the head of TSC for a decade.
TSC has appointed Evleen Mitei, Director of Discipline and Teacher Management, as the acting CEO until a substantive appointment is made.
