Teachers eye salary raise as Treasury allocates Ksh17B to civil servants

SRC teachers

Salaries for teachers are expected to rise from July following recommendations by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) that will translate to a higher budgetary allocation in the 2023/2024 Budget.

In documents tabled before the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning led by Molo Member of Parliament (MP) Kuria Kimani, the Treasury has allocated Ksh17.7 billion to the SRC.

“For public servants’ salary increment provisions, we have Ksh17.7 billion, and this has been provided for the implementation of SRC job evaluation,” Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo said.

SRC had frozen salary increments for public servants in 2021 to allow the government to stabilise the economy after Covid-19 put a standstill to many businesses resulting to destabilization.

Earlier, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO, Nancy Macharia, while addressing the National Assembly Committee on Education for consideration of the Financial Year (FY) 2023/2024 estimates of revenue and expenditure, revealed that the commission had set aside Ksh2.2 billion to aid in promotion of 13,713 teachers in a bid to improve morale, motivate employees and career growth.
