The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has decried the persistent challenges that teachers face while seeking medical services at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet.

Branch Secretary Paul Kimetto criticised the AON Minet medical scheme, describing it as dysfunctional and unresponsive to teachers’ needs.

He said that many teachers are forced to send relatives or friends to seek medical attention on their behalf due to frustration at the hospital.

“Teachers are forced to send relatives or friends with personal belongings to seek medical attention on their behalf due to frustrations at the hospital. This is wrong,” he said.

He called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to provide clarity on the issue, noting that teachers have contributed millions of shillings to the health insurance plan and deserve accountability.

Kimetto further urged KUPPET, TSC, and Tenwek Hospital to convene an urgent dialogue to resolve the standoff, stressing that teachers should no longer be subjected to suffering while seeking health services.

“The AON Minet scheme is failing. Teachers are suffering in silence and have been kept in the dark about the status of the scheme. It’s disheartening,” said Kimetto.

The impasse, which has dragged on for months, stems from claims by Tenwek Hospital that it has not received payments from the government, prompting it to limit or deny services to teachers covered under the AON Minet scheme.
