Teachers demand for funds to put up computer laboratories in Junior Secondary schools

Teachers have called on the government to allocate more money in equipping schools with computers, since computer is among major subjects in Junior Secondary School (JSS).

Computer is a technical subject in secondary schools and the schools still lack computer laboratories.

St Brigid Baraka Oontoyie Girls Secondary School in Kajiado County principal, Jemimah Mutia, says more learners choose computer as technical subject.

“Sixty Form two chose computer studies but had to reduce to fifty due to lack of enough computers,” she said.

The Principal appealed for more resources to buy computers since it is a major subject and the use of computers enhances learning better than other pedagogical methods.

Magumoni Girls Secondary Principal, Tharaka-Nithi County, Catherine Mbole noted that computer teachers mostly prefer technical institutions to secondary schools.

“The government should provide the necessary resources such as laboratories, computers and teacher,” she said.

Most private primary and secondary institutions have invested in computer compared to government institutions.

The Digital Literacy Programme was among President Uhuru Kenyatta’s major projects he promised Kenyans in 2013.

The project which was worth Ksh24.6 billion was later transformed from issuance of laptops to tablets for Class One pupils.

It later faced a lot of challenges and failed to kick off few were issued with tablets.

Some of the challenges the government faced include poor state of most primary schools, reduced budget by Sh5.5 billion, electricity supply, and security issues in school.

Others are Curriculum and teacher training.

A report released in 2018 by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development indicated that only 39 per cent of teachers used ICT in teaching.

Many students are missing out on the ability to get a head start on learning technology of their future, most schools are further behind the technology curve.

KNEC will administer a summative assessment to all the 2022 Grade 6 learners from 28th to 30th November 2022. In compliance with the 100% Transition Policy, all learners will be placed in JSS.
