What was meant to be a grand farewell celebration for outgoing Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia has been postponed after one of the key organisers, Martha Omollo, was taken ill.

Macharia officially handed over leadership of the Commission yesterday, ending a transformative 10-year tenure marked by major policy reforms and the digitisation of education services.

While the TSC chairperson presided over an official send-off during the handover, teachers and stakeholders had separately planned a more festive, independent celebration, which is now deferred.

Martha Omollo, a vocal teachers’ welfare advocate and one of the chief planners of the event, is currently hospitalised, leading organisers to call off the party until a later date. Speaking from her hospital bed, Omollo shared her disappointment at missing the moment but confirmed that plans for a proper send-off remain alive.

“If I were not taken ill, the celebration would be top notch—Wacha hiyo ya jana alizindikiwa na chairman (Forget about yesterday’s done by the chairman). We’re postponing the celebrations to a later date,” Omollo said.

According to organisers, the party was initially set to take place on June 21, but has now been pushed to August to allow for proper planning and recovery.  The party promises to be a lively occasion.

Teachers from across the country are invited to join the festivities, which will feature wasanii wa isukuti kutoka Kawangware (isukuti performers from Kawangware), nyama choma (roast meat), and vinywaji vya kutosha (plenty of refreshments).

The mood is expected to be both celebratory and symbolic — not only to honour Dr. Macharia’s decade of service, but also to mark what many teachers are calling a celebration of freedom and new beginnings.

Omollo welcomes all teachers to attend the August event once she recovers.

The educators had planned the event to honour Dr. Macharia’s efforts in professional development, gender equity in school leadership, and transparency in TSC operations.

While no specific date in August has been confirmed, organisers say the upcoming celebration will give the teaching fraternity a chance to bid a proper farewell to a leader many credit for changing the face of the Commission.

Dr. Macharia, who has also been nominated for the 2025 Digitally Fit Awards – Person of the Year, is expected to continue her influence in public service circles beyond her tenure at the TSC.
