Teacher who assaulted pupil has been arrested

Teacher in Nyamira County who allegedly mercilessly canned 107 strokes to Grade Four boy, injuring him, has been arrested by the police.

Nyamira County Minister for Education, Kennedy Angwenyi while confirming the incident assured the public that the teacher who assault the boy at Riang’ombe Primary School has been arrested and will be taken to court.

“The teacher should have followed the code of conduct to refrain himself from anger when correcting the boy but he lacked control,” he said.

The Minister who spoke to Education News said that caning of children at school is outlawed in the country adding that the suspect will face imprisonment if he is found guilty.

According to the classmates of the victim, the teacher used them to pin the boy down as he hit him with 107 strokes of the cane over alleged carelessness of misplacing his school uniform.

“The teacher asked us to hold and press him on the ground then ordered us to count the beatings,” said one boy at the school.

When the teacher learned that he had hurt the boy’s behinds, he hid him in the dormitory to avoid discovery as other children proceeded to Manga ground for sports.

When the Uncle of the victim learned about the torture his nephew was undergoing, he went to school and took him to Nyamira County Hospital where he was treated and allowed to return home.

“When I took the boy to hospital he was unable to sit because of the pains on his buttocks but I thank the nurses who treated him,” he said.

According to the head teacher of Riang’ombe Boarding Primary School Mrs Isabellah Kumenda, the boy was missing at school because the guardian took him away without permission.

She said she could not comment much because the case was with the police.

The beating of the nine years old boy attracted the attention of many people, including human rights activist who demanded justice to be done for the minor.

Borabu Subcounty Deputy County Director of Education who visited the school asked parents to be patient and promised that his office will follow up the matter with a lot of keenness.

He asked parents not to withdraw their children from the school because of fear adding that the assault of the boy was an isolated case that should be treated individually.
