The scheduled teacher promotion interviews set to commence on Monday, December 4, 2023, will proceed as planned across approximately 276 sub-counties.

This development comes after the initial suspension of the exercise due to adverse weather conditions caused by El Niño rains.

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has now granted approval for the interviews to resume in areas deemed less affected by the inclement weather.

The primary objective of these interviews is to fill 36,505 vacant positions in both primary and secondary schools.

These positions were advertised in September of this year, and the interviews aim to select qualified candidates for promotion.

For primary school teachers in job groups C1 to C4, the interview sessions are scheduled to take place from December 4th to December 15th, 2023, in various sub-counties.

However, interviews in areas identified as hazardous due to ongoing rains have been postponed until a later date.

Notable among these excluded regions are the sub-counties of Makueni, Garissa, Marsabit, and Isiolo counties.

The interview process kicks off with C1 teachers vying for 10,819 slots for the Senior Teacher II (C2) position in regular schools and an additional 700 slots for special schools.

During the interviews, candidates are required to present the following documents:

  1. Original National ID Card
  2. Original Academic and Professional Certificates
  3. Letter of appointment to the current Grade
  4. Letter of appointment to the current post (where applicable)
  5. Analysed individual subject results in KCPE/KCSE Examinations for the last three years, certified by TSC County Directors/Sub County Directors.
  6. Performance Appraisal Reports for 2020, 2021, and 2022
  7. Any other relevant testimonials supporting your performance

Approximately 150,000 primary and secondary school teachers were shortlisted and issued interview letters, competing for the 36,505 available vacancies.

Secondary school teacher interviews are slated for the following year, running from January 3rd to January 16th, 2024. In this phase, C2 teachers will vie for 3,040 slots for Senior Teacher I (C3) positions in regular primary schools and an additional 346 slots for special schools. C3 teachers will compete for 1,930 slots for the Deputy Headteacher II (C4) position in regular primary schools.

Deputy Headteachers in C4 will engage in the competition for 1,049 Headteacher positions in C5 for regular primary schools, with an additional 30 slots allocated for special schools.

This unprecedented interview process marks a record number of teachers being shortlisted for promotion by the TSC. Furthermore, it represents the first instance of such promotion interviews for school administrators being conducted at the sub-county level.
