The teaching fraternity in Kakamega County turned out in large numbers to mourn the late teacher Franklyne Otsieno, popularly known as Drogba, who died in a road accident at Lung’anyiro along the Mumias-Busia Highway. He was laid to rest at his rural home in Munami village, Matungu, in a ceremony attended by thousands of mourners.
Educators from Matungu, Mumias, Butere and across the wider region described Otsieno as a dedicated teacher whose passion for learners and commitment to education left a lasting mark. His colleagues said his death had robbed the profession of a vibrant voice and a dependable figure.
KNUT Mumias Branch Executive Secretary Cyprian Chibile paid tribute to Otsieno, recalling him as a forthright and sharp individual who never shied away from speaking his mind. “He was a KNUT school representative who constantly briefed us on issues affecting his institution. I have lost a friend, a brother and a dependable person,” Chibile said.

During the funeral, Chibile also criticised the Ministry of Education over what he termed as flawed placement of Grade 10 learners expected to join senior schools next year. He said the exercise had caused panic among parents after some students were posted to distant schools they had not chosen. “It is unfortunate that the ministry is gambling with Grade 10 placements. Urgent action is needed to correct these anomalies,” he said.
Chibile further appealed to the Teachers Service Commission to speed up the processing of benefits for teachers who die while in service. He noted that delays often leave bereaved families struggling financially, with children dropping out of school and households unable to meet basic needs. He urged the commission to fast-track payments to ease the burden on affected families.
Beyond the classroom, Otsieno was actively involved in community and professional groups, including the Matungu Youth Forum, Football Kenya Federation, KNUT and the Western Drama Welfare Association, reflecting his broad engagement in social and cultural activities.
The burial was also attended by political leaders from the Western region, among them former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala and politician Bonface Osanga.
Otsieno, who died at the age of 40, leaves behind a widow and children.
