Residents of Awendo in Migori county have decried the high crime rates in the area, a situation they attributed to the use of illicit brew chang’aa and drugs like bhang among others.

Recently, a primary school teacher was attacked by unknown people in the evening hours and robbed of Shs 6,000, two mobile phones and a wrist watch.

Speaking to Education News from his hospital bed at Migori county hospital, the male teacher from Manyatta primary school in Awendo sub county, narrated how six men appeared from the road side and landed on him with blows and crude weapons.

“They ordered me to remain quiet as they knocked my head several times until I became unconscious.’ He said.

The teacher spent the night in the cold until morning when good Samaritans took him to the hospital.

Awendo sub county police commander Mrs. Mary Musyoka confirmed the incident and said that her officers had started investigations to arrest the criminals.

Mrs Musyoka appealed to the public to volunteer any information that might help the police arrest the law breakers.

‘I will leave no stone unturned. I also appeal to residents to remain calm in order to allow my team to do their job,’ she said.

Elijah Oduor, a resident, said that many youth from the area are lured into social evils because the county is at the border of another country.

The residents complained that in the first two weeks of the year, three people were killed by unknown people at night.
