Teach vernacular in schools, says Speaker

By Asa Maina

Nyeri County Speaker John Kaguchia has suggested that children in lower classes be taught vernacular.
The Speaker said it is important that children know how to speak their mother tongue.
He spoke in Nyeri during the inaugural meeting for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) caregivers and launch of Elimu Fund bursary.
He said he was disappointed that even with the new curriculum that proposes that vernacular be taught in schools, some academies insist they cannot teach Kikuyu in schools because Nyeri was a cosmopolitan region.
“Uhuru Kenyatta who is currently the President was born in State House, raised up there and attended schools in high places but speaks fluent Kikuyu,” he said.
Kaguchia said the culture of teaching children mother tongue should return in county’s public and private institutions. He said: “There should be no school, private or public that should not practice this.”
He called on KNUT and KUPPET officials to help in having Kikuyu taught in schools to ensure that children understood the language better.
