An urgent alert signed and stamped by UDOMASA General Secretary Isaac Mwihenge warns University of Dodoma academic staff to exercise caution in classrooms following the arrest of a colleague over alleged remarks linked to student demonstrations.

A caution has been issued to academic staff at the University of Dodoma (UDOM) in Tanzania, urging them to be cautious in their classrooms.

This follows the arrest of a fellow lecturer over remarks allegedly linked to student demonstrations.

The warning is contained in an urgent circular dated December 12, 2025, issued by the University of Dodoma Academic Staff Association (UDOMASA) and addressed to all its members.

According to the letter, the lecturer was arrested on December 9, had his home searched, and was interrogated at a police station before being released on bail.

The association states that the staff member was accused of allegedly making remarks during a lecture held on December 8 between 10:30am and 1:30pm., which authorities claim incited students to participate in demonstrations the following day.

The circular further alleges that the remarks were covertly recorded in class and forwarded to senior authorities, who then ordered the arrest.

In the alert, UDOMASA warns that the incident signals a shift in the academic environment, describing it as “a ‘new reality’ where lectures may be under surveillance.”

As a result, the association says it has advised members to take precautions as it looks into the matter.

“Therefore, we urge extreme caution in classrooms, while we investigate the incident and determine the next appropriate steps,” the letter states.

The notice concludes with a brief yet emphatic call to staff to remain alert.

“Stay vigilant!” the circular reads.

The letter was signed by Isaac Mwihenge, the General Secretary of UDOMASA, and bears the official stamp of the University of Dodoma Academic Staff Association, confirming its authenticity.

The association did not disclose the name of the arrested lecturer, nor did it provide further details on the ongoing investigations.
