Take stern action on teachers who defile learners, TSC told

The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has been asked to take stern action against teachers involved in molesting learners sexually.
Children Charitable Institutions based in Kitale town have decried increased cases of defilement meted by tutors. Institutions’ Chairperson Sammy Khaoya said it was saddening that tutors who have the mandate to take care and guide learners are preying on them.
Khaoya said the teachers’ employer should deal with the vice in a bid to restore its dignity.
He lauded the Ministry of Education’s directive banning involvement of untrained teachers in teaching and training students in co-curricular activities.
He said sex pests were using such opportunities to abuse the students sexually.
At the same time, the institutions called upon the County Government of Trans Nzoia to involve its members in the exercise of rehabilitating street children in Kitale town. Khaoya said the exercise being undertaken by the County Government lacks professionalism and prone to abuses.
He accused the county askaris for using brutality while arresting the street children.
He said the County Government should put on hold the programme of removing the kids from the streets until trained personnel are involved to ensure that the children’s rights are not violated.
“The programme needs involvement of people with training and expertise in handling children affairs otherwise it can be abused”, he said. Khaoya made the remarks during the Child for Africa celebrations in Kitale town.
