Take preventive measures to curb deadly diseases in schools, principals urged

diseases

The County Government of Bungoma has called for the implementation of preventive measures in all boarding schools across the county as one way of taming the outbreak of deadly diseases in the area.

Health and Sanitation CECM Dr Andrew Wamalwa urged schools to fumigate dormitories to prevent students and other staff from contracting malaria.

His sentiments come in the wake of the death of a student at Khasoko High School who succumbed to malaria.

The CECM disclosed that the malaria outbreak at the institution was reported on May 17 after 24 students complained of severe headache and general body weakness.

The students were taken to Khasoko Health Centre for medical examination.  10 students tested positive for malaria while two had severe malaria.

One of the students, who tested positive for severe malaria, had persistent headache and became weak hence was transferred to Bungoma County Referral hospital (BCRH) for further treatment. He passed away on May 19 and the school was closed indefinitely thereafter.

Dr Wamalwa noted that they are consulting public health officers and the school administration on how to reopen the school after adhering to all health protocols.

County Education Chief Officer Nicholas Kiboi appealed to the school administration, parents and the community to be patient as they work on strategies to avert such occurrences in the future.
