First year students just admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) have been urged to take advantage of the technological advancement in the institution while studying.

While making his address to the 2022 cohort of first year students, Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Stephen Agong urged the new students to consider taking advantage of digital learning and earning opportunities even as they continue to pursue higher education.

“We wish to welcome you to the family of scholars. This is a prestigious world-class university. Please feel at home and make the most of every opportunity while here including taking advantage of the digital space and working for pay online,” he said.

He disclosed that JOOUST had availed the necessary infrastructure in terms of steady Wi-Fi, training and hardware that would help students tap into the digital space by creating, innovating, earning and investing to further their careers.

“For those staying within the campus, we have our Wi-Fi services throughout while for those that stay outside the campus, we have an arrangement with mobile network providers where they can buy bundles at affordable rates to surf the net,” the VC said.

He encouraged the students to watch out for peer pressure and bad company who may derail their focus and engage them in unproductive activities.

“Instead of engaging in socially unproductive activities which could derail your academic progress, with the digital space in place you need to use your free time wisely by working online. We have so many youth earning decently online and provided you have something to offer you can make good earnings,” he said.

Later on, Prof. Agong urged the new students to ensure they embraced cohesion and practice brotherhood towards their peers.

He added that while the country was still in a political mood, it was necessary for the students who were drawn from all over the country to focus on acquiring skills and knowledge to be able to create employment and change the society.
