Taita Taveta teachers want some regions declared hardship zones

The government has been urged to declare Rong’e Educational Zone in Mwatate, Taveta and Wundanyi sub-counties in Taita Taveta County hardship zones for teachers to start receiving hardship allowances and discharge their daily duties more efficiently and effectively.

Speaking to Education News from Wundanyi town recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Taita Taveta County Executive Secretary Lennox Mshila said teachers in those areas are currently facing hardships because the areas lack necessities like housing, good roads, among others.

The executive secretary said that the government should therefore consider those areas as hardship zones in order to motivate teachers.

“Teachers in those areas have completely lost their morale,” Mshila noted.

He said TSC had visited the area in February this year, yet nothing had happened so far, similar to an earlier evaluation tour by the Parliamentary Education Board, who promised that their matter would be looked into to no joy.
