Taita Taveta, Kiambu polytechnics crowned champions at Dual TVET gala

TVET PS Dr. Esther Muoria awards top-performing institutions and industry partners during the Dual TVET Recognition Gala in Nairobi.

Kenya’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have been lauded for their outstanding contribution to skills development, innovation, and inclusion during the Dual TVET Mid-Term Project Review and Recognition Gala held in Nairobi.

Taita Taveta and Kiambu National Polytechnics were named the overall Dual TVET champions. At the same time, Karen Technical Institute for the Deaf and Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind received special recognition for their commitment to inclusive education.

Gold Crown EPZ and Stantech Motors were among the private sector partners honoured for advancing industry-linked training and apprenticeship opportunities.

TVET Principal Secretary Dr Esther Muoria praised the increasing partnership between training institutions and the private sector, describing the Dual TVET model as a transformative approach that is “turning learning into livelihoods.”

“Our youths are one of the biggest resources, if not actually the biggest in Kenya, and therefore we want to ensure that they are properly skilled through Dual TVET because this is the resource that, as a country, we are going to depend on to industrialise this country,” said Dr Esther Muoria, PS, State Department for TVET.

Lorah Abedi, Deputy Principal at Taita Taveta National Polytechnic, noted that the initiative has significantly improved the quality of training and industry readiness among graduates.

“We’ve seen a change in the quality of the products, that’s the trainees that we’ve input since we onboarded. While training, our trainees appreciate the work they will do in the industry. They get hands-on experience. It has exposed them to a whole lot of things other graduates do not get an opportunity to experience,” she said.

Sammy K. Waititu, Chief Principal of Kiambu National Polytechnic, expressed pride in his institution’s achievements under the Dual TVET programme.

“We were selected as three institutions, and Kiambu was given the lead, and I want to say that we’ve not disappointed. We’ve won all the prestigious awards, including being the overall winner,” he pointed out.

He added that the programme has delivered a measurable impact on employability and workforce preparedness.

“The impact, as far as our trainees are concerned, has been quite phenomenal. Our trainees graduate, and even before they graduate, they’re absorbed into the labour market. I believe that is the way to go.”
