Taita Taveta County yesterday held its inaugural Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Teacher of the Year Awards, marking a major step in recognizing and uplifting the educators who shape Kenya’s youngest learners.
The ceremony, hosted in Mwatate Sub-county, brought together teachers, retirees, education officers, and county leaders to celebrate outstanding service in early learning.
During the event, Douglas Mwakio of Mwatunge ECDE Centre was named the 2025 Teacher of the Year, earning praise for his innovative teaching methods and unwavering dedication to nurturing young minds.
“This award belongs to every ECDE teacher who keeps showing up to shape young minds despite the challenges we face,” Mwakio said. “Early learning sets the tone for a child’s entire education journey.”

Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime, who officiated the event, said the awards were part of a broader effort to motivate educators and improve learning outcomes across the county. “It is important to appreciate teachers’ hard work because recognition inspires progress,” he said. “Our focus remains on strengthening education at the foundation level.”
The county also honored retired teachers for their years of service, with Governor Mwadime urging them to remain active in community development. “Your experience remains valuable beyond active service,” he told the retirees.
County Executive for Education, Dr Panuel Mwaeke, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to improving ECDE infrastructure and training. “We are working to enhance ECDE facilities and promote a more supportive environment for learners and teachers in all wards,” he said.
Bura Ward MCA and County Assembly Majority Leader, Anthony Mng’ambwa, described ECDE teachers as the cornerstone of the education system. “They are the ones who build the foundation of knowledge and values in our children. Their efforts deserve continued support and appreciation,” he said.
The awards ceremony underscored Taita Taveta’s growing investment in early childhood education, a sector often overlooked despite its critical role in shaping lifelong learning.
