Suspects who terrorized Nyansiongo Principal, Ezekiel Okeyo and his family in Nyamira County have finally been apprehended.
Nyamira County Commissioner, Onesmus Kytha, praised the diligent efforts of his police officers in bringing these individuals to justice.
Zipporah Okeyo, the principal’s wife and a nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA), said that the ordeal unfolded when a gang of more than 10 armed assailants, disguised as law enforcement officers, invaded the residence of
“For a distressing period of eight hours, they held the family hostage, committing acts of violence and looting their belongings,” she recounted.
Zipporah stated that the criminals, wielding crude weapons, falsely claimed to be conducting an investigation involving her brother-in-law.
According to her, they confiscated the family’s mobile phones, effectively cutting off their communication with the outside world, and proceeded to ransack the entire property, stealing valuable items, including ATM cards.
The audacity of the attackers was further evidenced by their actions, as they donned masks to conceal their identities and even ventured into the family’s kitchen to prepare a meal.
As word of the incident spread, villagers gathered at the Okeyo residence, expressing frustration at the delayed response from the nearby police station.
Despite the community’s criticism, the local chief appealed for calm, emphasizing the importance of an impartial investigation.
Prominent figures such as Kenyenya Chairman Walter Nyambati and Governor Amos Nyaribo suggested that the attack might have political motivations, targeting those who supported the governor.
Local philanthropist and National Vice Chairman of the Whisper Party, Victor Swanya, condemned the attack as a form of political manipulation and urged residents to maintain peace.
In response to these concerns, county detectives launched a robust manhunt for the suspects, vowing to bring them to justice.
Nyamira North Subcounty Police Commander Robert Ndambili confirmed the arrest of some suspects and stated that they were cooperating with the investigation.
“If found guilty of robbery with violence under penal code section 296/2, the accused could face severe penalties, including hanging or life imprisonment,” Ndambili noted.
