Support schools in transitioning to clean energy use, Ministry urged

The Ministry of Education has been urged to support learning institutions in transitioning from firewood use to clean energy.

Mr Eric Naivasha, who heads the energy and environment pillar at Equity Bank, said that the government should increase capitation to enable colleges and secondary schools to transition to safe energy.

Speaking at Litein AIC girls during the launch of a cooking gas project initiated by Equity Bank, Mr Naivasha  urged principals and head teachers to embrace clean energy in their school kitchens  in an effort to conserve the environment and save between  32%- 40% of the costs they use on energy.

He added that clean energy is also hygienic to kitchen workers.

‘I congratulate this school for their bold step in embracing the clean gas project. Learning institutions have contributed to environmental degradation at an alarming rate because they cut lots of trees for firewood consumption,’ he pointed out.

Mr Naivasha said that Equity Bank offers leadership on environmental conservation and protection.

He added that the bank has also stepped in to provide financial solutions to institutions during the transition period and that currently, climate change is the biggest catastrophe facing the globe.

The school principal Teresa J Sogomo and the school BOM were present during the launch.

Lauding the initiative, Sogomo thanked the bank for assisting the school to transition successfully from firewood use to clean energy.

She said the project will enable the cooks save valuable time on preparing food and that students will have more time for their studies.
