Suna MP laments CBC’s slow progress, teacher shortage, and resource inadequacy

The Member of Parliament (MP) of Suna West Peter Masara has decried that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) rolled out a year ago, has been progressing slowly, and there is lack of qualified teachers and resources.

Speaking during his press release at Maranatha Church Assemblies in Migori Town, the legislator urged the Government to act swiftly in addressing the shortcomings of the curriculum.

Masara emphasized the need for qualified teachers and adequate resources to support the new curriculum, suggesting that existing teachers could be trained to handle CBC, rather than employing new ones.

He also highlighted the strain on schools caused by the delayed release of funds and unpaid suppliers.

The legislator also stressed the importance of preserving the quality of education for the sake of the nation’s children, expressing concern that the current challenges in education are hindering students’ progress and putting a strain on both educators and learners.

Masara said that these issues with CBC implementation are widespread in primary schools across the country.

“Secondary schools have already established laboratories, although they will be overstretched but there is a starting point as opposed to the current situation,” he stated.

The MP asserted that the CBC should have been primarily implemented in secondary schools, where infrastructure was already available, and calls for immediate action from the government.

Furthermore, the legislator highlighted the financial difficulties faced by schools due to delayed funding and unpaid suppliers, with principals being forced to send students home intermittently, disrupting the learning process.
