Sub county school produces first A plain grade in a decade

Residents from Kakamega North sub county are a proud lot after a student from Friends Shamberere Boys scored an A plain in 2021 KCSE, the first in the region in the last ten years.

Sub county academic committee chairman Bernard Mikangi said it’s such a huge milestone for the sub county since they have been in search of such grades for a long time.

“Plans are underway to reward the student with Shs 20,000 as agreed by the academic committee,” he said.

The academic chairman said the region performs poorly due to absenteeism.

“Once students are sent home for fees, they choose to engage in activities that make it hard for them to go back to school. Some start the boda boda business and go for disco matangas and forget all about school work,” he said.

He went on to add that since most of the schools are day schools (the area has only sic boys and9 girls boarding schools), it’s hard to monitor the movements of the students.

He called on parents and the local administration to come up with measures to ensure students in day schools study while at home.

Addressing parents during Form One Orientation Day at his school, Shamberere Boys principal Robert Lumbasi revealed that the area academic committee was planning to award the top student as a way of motivating other students to work hard in school.

He hailed the good working relationship between the teachers, the BoM and other stakeholders for the impressive results posted. In 2021 KCSE, the school had a mean of 5.507 and produced the best candidate in the sub county.

“Our good performance had a positive influx on our school population. We currently have over 600 students,” he said.

He thanked the organizations that have continued to support students with over 350 marks, adding that the students have been  pace setters with most of them qualifying to university.
