Students were victims of police brutality during anti-Finance Bill protests, Migori Governor says

Migori County Governor Ochillo Ayacko has asked the security officers to avoid using excessive force during peaceful protests.

The county boss regretted that most of those who were killed and maimed during the countrywide peaceful demonstrations were youthful university and school leavers who were struggling in their studies because of lack of employment caused by nepotism and corruption by those who are in power.

He said the government’s obligation is to safeguard its people instead of destroying when they expressing their democratic rights.

The governor made the remarks when he visited six victims of gunshots who are receiving treatment at Migori Teaching and Referral hospital following Thursday anti-Financial Bill protests across the country.

Accompanied by Migori County Director of Medical Services Dan Ochiel, Governor Ayacko extended his sympathy to the victims and their families promising that the county government shall assist in paying medical bills.

According to hospital report, majority of the victims were responding well to medications save for two who were shot in the stomach and the hand and were in critical conditions.

“All bills that will be incurred by these innocent young people who are exercising their democratic rights peacefully but were met with brutality will be waived,” he said.

The governor called for peace in the country to enable the citizens to continue with their businesses and revive the sinking economy of this country.

“Our country is blessed with a lot of untapped resources and this calls for mindful leaders who should harness the curious minds and energy from the youth to exploit the resources for their prosperity,” he said.

He appealed to the youth to listen to their conscience and counsel from their parents and other concerned adults to enable them to find long lasting socio-economic and political solutions for this country.

Flanked by a number MCAs, he asked the youth to seek rational dialogue with the national government instead of persistent demonstrations that are likely to tear the country into unfathomable chaos and more bloodshed.
