Students in higher learning institutions have been urged to elect leaders who have their best interests at heart.
Nominated Member of Parliament Denitah Ghati urged youths to vote wisely in next year’s general election and elect leaders who can empower them through job creation.
Speaking during the burial ceremony of Migori county Orange Democratic Movement party chairman Phillip Makabongo’s mother Rosalina Abongo held at Kitere Technical Training Institute, Ghati expressed concern that many youths have been taken for granted by leaders who only use them to fulfill their ambitions.
Ghati, who declared interest in the county’s women representative position, promised to work with gubernatorial aspirant Dr. Ochilo Ayacko once elected into office to create jobs for the youth in a move to eradicate poverty.
“You have the opportunity of changing the narrative of joblessness by electing leaders who will create job opportunities. Do not elect those who walk around dishing money and giving fake promises,” Ghati warned youths.
She also urged youths to shun from participating in violence during the electioneering period but to instead embrace unity as they focus on development activities to make money.
The nominated MP, who was the first women representative of the county elected in 2013, said that her track record speaks of her ability to lead and to be re-elected for the same post after her input in the education sector.
She built an ICT hub in Awendo, awarded scholarships to learners in both secondary and tertiary institutions within the county and also funded and empowered women and youths through their development groups to stabilize on self-employment.
