Students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions have been asked to appreciate efforts made by their parents and the State who allocate their money to educate them, by taking their studies seriously.

Speaking at Kisii National Polytechnic during the closing of the institution’s Cultural Week, County Director in charge of Culture, Children and Women, Nyambane Obino underscored the importance of vocational training.

“Yours is industrial-oriented so when you graduate with quality grades you become your own employers and job creators,” he said.

Obino asked residents to shun the notion that those who joined TVET colleges are failures and instead view the training as a step towards their dream career.

County nurse Eunice Abere cautioned the students against drug abuse and peer pressure lest it derails their focus.

During the week-long culture showcase, students displayed impressive ethnic cultures including; Luo, Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Abagusii and Luhya traditional cookery, dressing and dances such as the Luo Ramogi dance, the Abagusii Ribina and the Luhya Isukuti.

Other shows at the fete included beauty contests, recitations and art depicting issues challenging the society like the quest for peace, fight against hunger, climate change and gender equity.

The Polytechnic Principal Mr. Daniel Nyariki thanked the students and the planners for making the event successful.

He said that the institution valued the annual event because it encourages the social fabric among learners, the staff and the public.

“When all students and staff break from their routines to soak themselves in a world of entertainment, they are refreshing their minds without knowing that they are in another disguised classroom,” he said.

Nyariki said that the Polytechnic has taken great strides in advancement of technology and appealed to parents to enroll their children to benefit from the variety of courses on offer.
