Kisii Diocese Catholic Bishop Okemwa Mairura has urged parents and teachers to incorporate Christian teachings into their homes and schools, promoting peace and harmony in their lives.

He told the students to fear God because He is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom that guides all human beings and the whole creation.

The Bishop thanked the pioneers of the Catholic Church in Kisii County, who established the first formal schools, including Cardinal Otunga, Mosocho Boys, Nyabururu, St. Paul’s Gekano, St. John’s Nyamagwa, and St. Kizito Nyansiongo, among others, who have produced great individuals serving in various positions around the world.

The Bishop was speaking at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School in Kitutu Chache South Constituency on Saturday when he celebrated his 70th Birthday Party and 30 years of uninterrupted service as a Catholic Bishop.

hI thank God for all this great grace bestowed on us to continue serving in the church,” he said.

Bishop Mairura, an old boy of Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School, challenged teachers to be models for their students by walking their talk, enabling them to mould the learners into responsible citizens.

He decried the recent unrest by Gen Z in some parts of the country, attributing it to a lack of self-control, and then appealed to the youth to come to their senses and realise that the government cannot be built through violence.

He asked them to embrace love and respect for their parents if they want to live many days, adding that this is the foremost commandment in the Bible, with a promise.

He asked parents to treat their children like gifts from God, being patient and tolerant with them, yet without compromising as they mature into adulthood.

The jovial Bishop asked the media to report accurately, saying that their work reached many people. Therefore, they should report objectively to create a balanced society of information consumers.

“You people report what we say without adding any salt because yours is to work like mirrors that reflect the image of the real object without altering it,” he said

Concerning the ongoing jostling for the Presidency in the country, the Bishop asked those who are salivating for the seat to respect President William Ruto.

“As for now, he is our president, we must respect him, and I respect him because people elected him,” he said.

The Bishop spoke without naming anyone, asking politicians to avoid going outside the country to preach tribalism from the right, saying that was a betrayal of their country.

“If you have grudges with your brothers at home, you only scratch each other within the homestead, and everything ends there. You could not go to preach your nakedness to in-laws because that is not African,” he said.

The function was attended by many priests from Kisii County, Nyamira, and the neighbouring dioceses, along with numerous church members.

Also present were Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi and Kisii County Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, among many members of the Kisii County Assembly.

Kibagendi tried to drum up support for the former CS for Education and Internal Security, Fred Matiangi, for President. However, he was received with a cold response for unknown reasons.

The Deputy Governor praised the administration of Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School for its holistic development.

“We used to come here when I was about. I thank you for receiving the old glory of this school,” he said.

The Principal of the School, Ezekiel Okeyo, said the school has embarked on a serious strategy to continue its tradition of holistic learner development by involving them in sports, environmental care, and community outreach activities.

He urged parents to take an active role in collectively developing the school. He thanked the church for its spiritual nourishment to both learners and teachers.
