Students take up initiative for children with disability in Migori

Children with disability during "We Ring the Bell" campaign in Rongo

Kuja Primary School for the Deaf in Rongo Town in Migori County on the March, 21 2024 was alive when it hosted the annual “We Ring the Bell” event to raise awareness of equal rights for children with disabilities.

This year event was sponsored by the CARITAS Organization and the Catholic Diocese of Homabay, alongside other sponsors.

Conducted in partnership with the Cheshire team Kenya, the event focused on health, education, livelihood, social participation, and empowerment for the parents of children with disabilities.

A walk took place to increase awareness among the general public, using banners and placards, and later, children from seven schools in the area and guests gathered at Kuja Primary School “rang the bell”, noisy plates, using bells, and other materials to alert all the passers-by.

Guest of Honor Rose Anyuka, said she was turned that way at age 11 while in class 6 due to hearing problem.

She is also the Coordinator at the National Council for People with Disability, Migori County.
She encouraged the Government to really help the disabled by timely monthly disbursement of funds for the running of various programmes.

In attendance were organizations and different personalities, among them: Rongo University, AJIRA Kenya, GENO-Epilepsy Awareness Creation, Sickle Cell Foundation, Deputy Director of Education-Rongo Sub -county, among others.
