Students of Tarach Secondary School in Turkana West Sub-County, Turkana County, have been sent home until further notice after a fire destroyed two dormitories under unclear circumstances.
The incident which has left a trail of destruction left students’ personal belongings, beddings and books reduced to ashes. Even though no injuries or fatalities were reported, the loss has disrupted normal learning activities at the school.
School authorities and local education officials are yet to confirm the exact cause of the fire. Investigations have been launched to determine whether it was an accident or a deliberate act linked to student unrest.
This incident adds to the growing trend of student unrest and school fires that have recently been witnessed in various secondary schools across the country.

Education stakeholders have raised concerns over the rising cases of indiscipline, arson and safety lapses within school compounds, urging for quick interventions to restore order and prevent further disruptions to learning.
Local education officials and security personnel have visited the school to assess the damage and recommend the next steps. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education is expected to issue a directive on the way forward, even as parents express concern over their children’s safety and academic progress.
At the moment, the school remains closed as authorities work to establish the full extent of the damage and restore normalcy.
