Students injured in Kisii, Nyamira earth tremor

Students from schools in Kisii and Nyamira counties were rushed to hospital after they sustained injuries in an earth tremor that hit various parts of the country.

The tremor which occurred minutes before 5 o’clock in the morning at a time the boarding students were heading to classrooms for their morning preps, is said to have scared them with some of them jumping from second floor.

Speaking to Education News on the matter, Kisii county director of education in the ministry of Education, Mr Pius Ngoma confirmed that about 50 Kereri Girls students were affected by the tremor.

He said there was no course for alarm since most of them were given first aid at the school by their teachers while those taken to the hospital only had minor soft tissue injuries and had gone back to school after receiving treatment.

“The tremor shocked learners who were heading to their various classrooms for the morning preps,” said Ngoma.

 “Our students must remain alert on some of the geological happenings which may occur especially after a long period of dry spell or even during heavy and long rains,” he added.

At about the same time, students at Riyabe Mixed secondary school in Nyamira county who were already in their morning preps also received minor injuries under the same circumstances.

Sources in hospital told Education News that one of the form one students aged 17 years broke his leg and was to undergo an x-ray to a certain if he had a shoulder dislocation.

 The doctor at the hospital who requested anonymity said the student had jumped from a classroom onsecond floor to the ground.

“He was brought to Keroka hospital but has since been referred to Tenwek hospital. The other students who had minor injuries had so far been treated and discharged from the hospital,” he said.
