Secondary school students from Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni counties recently attended a mentorship programme for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects sponsored by the United Nations Environmental, Social and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
The one week workshop took place at Machakos Girls High School in Machakos County.
Jackline Muli a Form One student from Precious Blood High School, Kilungu said negative attitude by girls towards STEM subjects was to blame for poor performance in the subjects.
“I am doing science subjects in school and I am performing well. In the last exam my lowest grade was an A- in Biology,” she said, adding that she wanted to pursue Computer Science in future.
Mutindi Musembi from St Annes Muthale Girls in Kitui County said there were stereotypes that girls could not beat boys in STEM subjects.
Berita Nyamusi a Form Two student from Matungulu Girls Machakos County said the workshop would nurture her passion in STEM subjects which will make her choose an appropriate career so that she can help in sustainable development of the country.
UNESCO Regional Programme Officer Alice Ochanga, said the Stem mentorship programme was initiated in 2014 and has robed in other partners like Safaricom, Women in Technology and Microsoft.
