Embu County Campus Students Organization (ECCSO) has called on government to come up with ways in which the street children loitering in Embu town can be taken to school.
The students while speaking when they held a party in Embu town for the street children said after interrogations many of them (the children) they had passion for school but they lacked an avenue on how they would get out of the streets to attend school.
Led by Nicholas Kasanga, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ECCSO, they observed that if the children will be taken to school then that will be a platform for them to shape their future.
“Many children you see here and who have been to streets for quite some time lack ways on how they can go to school because many are willing. If the government will consider taking them back to school then that will be a good move as they will be able to learn and better their future life,” said Kasanga.
At the same time Kasanga urged parents not to abdicate their responsibilities, noting that the rate at which the number of street children is growing in Embu town is on a worrying trend.
He said many street children have been subjected to poor living condition despite their constitutional right to acquire basic education.
His sentiments were echoed by Dr. Fridah Karani, a member of the organization who said that the street children have been going through hard times in streets because of lack of proper mechanism to rescue them from the hardship.
“Nothing will help this children come out of this life, if these children are taken to school then this will help them move out of this life.
“Education has been made free but it is not fully free as there are other requirements. The government should come with a mechanism to see how they will get out of here to school,” she noted.
The student organization pledged to continue helping the street children through donations saying that the children were being neglected and left to live on their own.
