Students asked to keep off political rallies, demos

Kisii County Woman Representative has cautioned students against participating in political shenanigans at the expense of their education.

Doris Aburi noted that the government invests a lot of money in education but it pains them when they see students, especially in Universities, indulging in activities such as unjustified demonstrations that disrupt their education progress.

Aburi was addressing mourners at Mosocho village in Kisii during the burial of Andrew Osoro, a brother to Catholic Diocese of Kisii Bishop Okemwa Mairura.

She urged parents to keep away from the forthcoming Sab Saba demonstrations prepared by the country’s opposition party to protest against the Finance Act 2023 that was recently assented to by President Ruto.

“When such unrest occurs, it is our children and women who suffer the most. I appeal to politicians to embrace dialogue to air their grievances,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by the county former Governor James Ongwae who added that the demonstrations will interfere with candidates who are now preparing for their national examinations.

Ongwae observed that the country is still in recovery from Covid-19 and its effects and called for serenity across the country.

Bishop Joseph Obanyi of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega underscored the importance of peace without which development cannot be attained.

He called on parents and leaders in the community to be role models to the youth.

“When we plant seeds of antagonism amongst ourselves instead of engaging in dialogue we sow seeds of rebellion among our children,” he said.

Also in attendance were 5 bishops from neighbouring counties, county leaders Anthoney Kibagendi, Innocent Obiri, Clive Ombane, Dr. Daniel Manduku, Richard Onyonka and former South Mugirango Constituency MP Omingo Magara.
