A student in Kisumu who attempted to commit suicide after failing to secure admission to form one has finally got a reprieve after being admitted to a local school.

The 13-year old Master Patrick Onyango had a reason to smile after being admitted to Kisumu Boys High school.

Onyango who scored 343 marks in KCPE examinations had earlier secured a calling letter from Buki High school in Wajir but his parents could not afford fees as they are financially unstable.

His former head teacher, Elly Otieno, later approached the management of Kisumu Boys which resulted in Onyango’s admission.

Otieno said that the student attempted to take his own life after being told by the management of Kisumu Boys High school to bring Sh10,000 as a show of commitment.

‘The boy who lives with his parents at Nyalenda could not raise the fee after his father who vends water was grounded as a result of a road accident.’ Otieno said.
Otieno said the boys father who was the sole bread winner can no longer work after being knocked by a motor cycle.
The head tecaher indicated that his mother who does small scale business cannot afford paying his fees.

He said teachers at central primary school raised some cash which they used in shopping for the student.

Otieno commended the principal of Kisumu Boys High school Mr Eric Duya for admitting the student unconditionally.

Duya said five other students with similar needs had also been admitted at the school.

He said demand for place at the school has been on the increase in recent years.
