Student hospitalized after vitriol acid attack

An 18-year-old girl from St. Stephen Musaalani Secondary School in Mwala Sub County in Machakos has been hospitalized after an acid attack and is nursing burns at Mwala Level Four Hospital. The chemical which she was attacked with is said to be vitriol.

According to a police report seen by Education News, the injured girl is a Form Four student who was doing practicals in the school laboratory when another female classmate threw acid on her.

The motive of the attack by the classmate is still unknown.

The girl suffered five percent burns with the affected areas being her ears, neck and shoulders.

She was rushed to Mwala Level Four Hospital where she is recuperating and in stable condition.

“Police officers visited the girl in the hospital where she was found with five percent degree burns but in a stable condition,” read part of the report.

Her mother, Immaculate Munyiva, told the police that the girl who committed the act is well-known to her daughter.

Investigations into the incident have begun but the suspect is yet to be arrested.
