Lirhanda Girls High School in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County is counting losses after part of its roof was ripped off by a storm.
The storm, accompanied by heavy rains, destroyed a section of the roof of the dining hall.
The storm also caused massive destruction in the neighbourhood where trees and other plantations were uprooted.
School principal Linda Zalo said the incident happened on Wednesday, April 28, at around 8pm and that it was sheer luck that students are away on holiday.
She said they were surprised because the hall was one of the modern buildings at the institution.
“We have suffered huge losses and are appealing to well-wishers to help us repair the roof before schools reopen,” she said.
She said it was a big blow as the school was already in need of funds for renovations and expansion of the existing facilities.
The institution’s Board Chairman James Ngaila said they would be forced to seek help from the Shinyalu Constituency Development Fund committee, Ministry of Education and well-wishers.
“This school is already in need of a lot of money to turn it around and so this destruction has taken us back,” he said when he inspected the damage
He appealed to the school’s alumni to intervene and support them in raising funds towards the purpose.
