The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kilifi County chairman, Mr. Moses Mramba has urged the government to hasten the construction of infrastructure in Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) in the region.
During an interview in Malindi town recently, Mramba told Education News that insufficient infrastructure in the schools had affected teaching and learning in the schools.
He further disclosed that many JSS schools also did not have adequate learning materials and laboratories.
Mramba, who is also the Union Malindi branch Executive Secretary, stated that apart from the infrastructure, another challenge was teacher shortage where the teacher to student ratio was unfavourable placing the learners at a disadvantage.
He urged NGOs operating in the county, well-wishers and charitable organizations to chip in and provide funds or construct the required facilities to ensure learners continue studying.
At the same time, the KNUT Chairman warned parents in the county against politicizing school administration affairs saying the trend disrupts learning activities.
Mramba asked parents to instead use dialogue to solve problems affecting schools rather than chase headteachers away.
