State reforming education to fit global standards, Machogu says

Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, Mr. Ezekiel Machogu has said that the government is undertaking reforms aimed at realigning its education to fit global standards, with emphasis on competencies, technical and vocational training.

The CS made the remarks when the Australian Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon Tim Watts, paid him a courtesy call in his office yesterday.

He thanked the Australian Government for providing opportunities for Kenyans to pursue higher education since the 1980s.

“Many of them returned and are working in various sectors of the economy,” the CS said.

Mr. Machogu said that the cordial relations that have existed between the two countries had made Kenya benefit from the quality but comparatively affordable education system Australia has.

Hon Watt said it was gratifying to see many Kenyans study in Australian Universities but it would benefit the two countries more if the students returned home to build their country.

The Assistant Minister said his government was willing to let Australian experts in higher education train Kenyans in various fields upon invitation by the government.

He said Australia continues to give priority to Technical Vocational and Technical Training as they are fundamental to a modern economy and expressed the need for countries to strengthen the quality, standards and curricula of TVET systems.

Present was the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, Australian Ambassador to Kenyan, Luke Williams and senior Ministry officials.
