Parents and education stakeholders in Kisii have come together in a bid to salvage Gekongo DEB Secondary School whose academic performance has shown a dwindling trend.

The parents of the school have undertaken that they will work hand in hand with the new principal and the Ministry of Education to promote the academic standards of the school.

Gekongo DEB Secondary School has never produced a single candidate who has made it to the university since its inception 20 years ago.

They said any community that does not prioritize education lags in everything.

The parents thanked the Ministry of Education for posting a new principal to the school saying he was development conscious.

The parents attributed the school’s poor performance to a land dispute between the school and the Catholic Church.

“The disagreement has caused instability of the school as it caused disruptions both to learners and the teachers.” Justus Ombati a parent said

The parents were speaking during the education stakeholders meeting at the school.

The meeting brought together all former students of the school who agreed to kick-start alumni through which they will solicit funds and ideas to raise the standards of the school.

The parents agreed to adopt a school feeding program so that the student may not waste much time on the way going home for lunch.

The new school Principal Lukas Maburi asked parents to get involved in the activities of the school including instilling discipline into their children because every success begins with discipline.

He decried the low student enrolment whose population now stands at a paltry 280.

“We are asking parents not to let their children stay at home even if they don’t have school at hand. We ask them to come and present their cases so that we see how we can move on.” The principal said

Former education officer Zachary Ondara told students to remain patriotic to their school and work hard to achieve their academic goals.

He asked them to shun activities that may cause teenage pregnancies but understand that their bodies are temples of God.

“I’m asking you to desist from drugs and alcohol abuse, kindly report any person who might want to lure you into the vices to the police,” Ondara said

He asked the students to make use of readily available resources like books provided by the Ministry of Education to enhance their studies.

Ondara also asked parents to cooperate with the Principal and his Management Committee to seek funds for the expansion of the institution’s infrastructure.
