St.Peter’s Mumias and Jinja Sec crowned 2025 East Africa rugby sevens champions

St Peter’s Mumias and Jinja Secondary School have been crowned the 2025 East Africa Rugby Sevens champions after an action-packed week at the Kakamega Bullring.

In the boys’ category, St. Peter’s Mumias secured the title after recording seven wins from eight matches in the round-robin format. This victory marks their first East Africa Games rugby sevens crown since 2016, bringing glory back to the school after nearly a decade of waiting. Bungoma High put up a strong challenge but had to settle for silver, while Bwake Boys took home the bronze medal.

In the girls’ division, Jinja SS from Uganda dominated the competition to claim the title. They topped the final rankings after consistent performances in their fixtures, making them the undisputed champions. St.Theresa’s Girls finished second with silver, while Kinale Girls rounded off the podium with bronze.

The spotlight now shifts to rugby fifteens, where All Saints Embu will take on Kisii School in the grand finale on Wednesday . All Saints Embu booked their place in the final with an emphatic 24–11 victory over Jinja SS, while Kisii secured a tense 3–0 win over Upper Hill School in a match decided by the smallest of margins.

The week-long championship has been filled with thrilling encounters across both codes of rugby. In fifteens, powerhouses such as Kisii School, Upper Hill, and All Saints Embu showcased their dominance, with matches that kept fans on edge until the final whistle. In sevens, St.Peter’s Mumias’ attacking flair and Jinja SS’s discipline proved too strong for their rivals, ensuring they left Kakamega with the regional crowns.

As the tournament nears its climax, all eyes will be on the rugby fifteens final between All Saints Embu and Kisii School, a clash expected to deliver fireworks.
