St Paul’s University launches new scholarship to support theology students

St. Paul’s University has launched a new scholarship programme aimed at providing financial support to deserving students pursuing theological studies. The Elder Gene Hyun Memorial Scholarship Award was officially launched at a ceremony on the university’s main campus in Limuru.

The program, which is a partnership with the U.S.-based Matthew 28 Ministries Inc., initially awarded scholarships to four students: John Selema, James Muhia, and Winnie Cherotich. The university’s leadership stated that the number of recipients will grow as more funds are raised.

During the launch, Vice-Chancellor Prof. James Kombo expressed his gratitude to Elder Jewel Hyun, the founder of Matthew 28 Ministries Inc., for her organisation’s unwavering support. He emphasised the profound impact that investing in a student’s education can have on their entire family and the wider community.

“The greatest empowerment is when you support a student,” Prof. Kombo said. “You will have touched his or her life, including that of theirSt. Paul’s University Launches New Scholarship to Support Theology Students family. Let us continue supporting one another.”

Elder Hyun, who was the event’s chief guest, spoke about her commitment to generosity, which she developed while living in North Korea. She shared how she and her late husband founded Matthew 28 Ministries Inc. to raise funds and support educational institutions and students in need. The partnership with St. Paul’s University has already led to the construction of several buildings on campus, including the Joshua and Timothy School of Theology.

She also urged the community to embrace a spirit of giving, noting that many people have the capacity to help those in need. “I urge them to support the needy,” Elder Hyun said. “We have needy people who can do wonders in their lives and for our society. Let us help them.”

The event was attended by key university officials, including Deputy Vice-Chancellors Abraham Waithima and Mwirigi Kiula, as well as staff, students, and invited guests. The scholarship program is expected to continue supporting future generations of theological scholars.
