St. Patrick’s Iten Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet County has been closed indefinitely following a student protest.
According to Keiyo North Sub-County Director of Education Alice Sitienei, the students allegedly destroyed school property while opposing plans to sit for this term’s examinations.
All students were sent home on Tuesday, and an investigation is underway.
This is the latest in a series of unrests reported in secondary schools during Term Two. Last week, Litein Boys High School in Kericho County was closed indefinitely after students went on rampage destroying key infrastructure; gate, classrooms in what was said to be undercooked rice served to them.

A short distance from Litein, Kipsigis Girls High School, was closed indefinitely after the administration reported planned strike. These are just among top schools who have reported unrest.
Data from past years shows second term, consistently records a high number of student unrest cases. Education officials link this to academic pressure from upcoming national and internal exams, prolonged stays in school with limited breaks.
The term is expected to end in two weeks’ time, even though learning continue to be disrupted by such cases, with parents being forced to bear high costs of replacing damaged properties.
