St. Mary’s School Yala and Sigoti Girls triumph as the 2025 Nyanza Region Rugby Sevens champions after a thrilling two-day tournament hosted in Yala, which featured top secondary schools from across the region.
In the boys’ final, St. Mary’s Yala reaffirmed their dominance with a 26-15 victory over Anjego. Yala controlled the tempo and made the most of their chances, rounding off a strong campaign that included a 45-0 quarterfinal win over Sawagongo and a narrow 7-5 semifinal triumph over Otieno Oyoo
Anjego had an impressive run beating Maseno 12-5 in the quarters and blanking Agoro Sare 14-0 in the semis. Despite falling short in the final, their performance earned them a spot at the upcoming National Rugby Sevens Games alongside Saint Mary’s Yala.
In the final playoff, Otieno Oyoo secured third place with a solid 22-7 win over Agoro Sare, closing the tournament on a high not but narrowly missed a spot in the final.

The girls’ final pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the tournament as Sigoti Girls dethroned pre-tournament favorites Nyagichenche 19-7. Sigoti’s path to the title included a 17-0 group stage win over Nyakach Girls and a hard-fought 10-5 semifinal win over Moi Suba Girls. Their victory marks a significant achievement as they advance to the national level for the first time as regional champions.
Nyagichenche had looked unstoppable in earlier rounds, cruising past their opponents in the group and knockout stages, including a tight 12-10 semifinal win over Sidindi, but couldn’t keep up with Sigoti’s intensity in the final.
Moi Suba Girls claimed third place, defeating Sidindi 10-0 in the playoff to secure the bronze medal. The win capped off a successful tournament for Moi Suba, who were consistent and composed throughout.
The top two teams in both categories St. Mary’s Yala and Sigoti Girls, along with runners-up Anjego and Nyagichenche will now represent the Nyanza region at the National Secondary School Rugby Sevens Championships later this year.
