Following the challenges many bright and needy students in Kenya face in paying school fees, which has led to some dropping out of school, St Bakhita Chuka Girls High School established the Benevolent Club to help raise fees and support the needy, bright girls in the school.
The school’s chief principal, Joan Muchina, noted that it was their first walk at the school, where they walked for eight kilometres around the town, aiming to raise funds for needy students in the school, targeting a goal of Sh1 million.
“I have a passion for this, I don’t like to see students suffering when there is an option, especially in fee issues. I used to do the same in my former school, Mwaani Girls, and I am thankful that my current school has already started the same. We will continue to make sure the needy are catered for,” Muchina said.
The chief principal revealed that they were targeting to raise sh1 million and was happy that they raised sh800,000, which she said would cover the beneficiaries’ fee balances. She added that it’s a nice cause, as they want the girls to study and even excel in their education.

Benevolent club chairlady Maricina Nthiga noted that the club was founded in 2020 and officially launched in the second term of 2021, after realising that the school had raised funds for a needy student who faced a fee payment challenge, clearing Sh84,000 for her.
“Under the patron of our chief principal, Joan Muchina, we come together as teachers, non-working staff, students and even outsiders to help the beneficiaries,” said Nthiga.
She requested that well-wishers come and help the students improve. The incoming BOM chair, Ali Mbaabu, whom outgoing chair Jennifer Mugambi ushered in, promised their full support towards the cause, as many bright girls languish in poverty.
