Special school for deaf in dire need of facilities

Students and teachers of a special school for deaf students in Trans Nzoia County have urged education officials to help them acquire much needed infrastructure and more teachers.
The institution which was registered in 2010 attracts learners from the region and neighbouring counties despite its
challenges that has seen it rely on well-wishers and CDF for funding.
The Michael Wamalwa Special School was started in 2007 as a special unit for Birunda primary school to accommodate learners with hearing difficulties.
The school head teacher Sylvester Munjalu said the school is majorly dependent on well-wishers who offer it a helping hand to run its programmes with most of the learners hailing from poor backgrounds.
“The current infrastructure was put up courtesy of the Kiminini CDF, Kitale Rafiki organisation, the Catholic Diocese of Kitale and other partners,” he narrated in an interview at the school.
He said the school is in dire need of a reliable feeding programme for the learners in addition to additional boarding facilities to meet the growing demand by new learners.
“The boarding block is partitioned in to two classroom size chambers, one for girls and the other for boys. Some are forced to sleep on the floor due to limited boarding facilities,” he said.
