Special needs teachers to go on strike in September over 2011 CBA

Torome addressing the press In Narok. KUSNET is now demanding for the implementation of the Finance ACT 2011, which recognizes the CBA, or they will down their tools when learning resumes in September.

The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has announced its intention to down their tools in September if by then the government will not have honoured a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that was signed in 2011.

The union is calling for the implementation of the Finance ACT 2011, which recognizes the CBA they signed with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

In a meeting in Narok that brought together KUSNET officials from across the country, Secretary General James Torome announced their preparedness for the industrial action, lamenting that they have pushed for the implementation without success, a situation that has left teachers demotivated.

“TSC has not honoured the CBA we signed in 2011. We have pushed for its implementation in vain. Schools will not open if the CBA is not implemented,” he said, urging parents to get prepared for the strike as they cannot stand State officers flaunting opulence when teachers are suffering.

According to him, their members will not report back for work in third term and will not be available for talks once the industrial action kicks off.

“The commission and the commissioners should be alert. We will not be available for talks once the strike kicks off. We have seen senior State officers exhibiting opulence when teachers are suffering. This is sad and unacceptable,” added Torome.

KUSNET also listed the problems facing special schools in the country, demanding that they be urgently addressed.
