Learners with special needs from North Rift region are among the more than 3,000 Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) to benefit from a Sh. 200 million kitty.
Each learner with special needs will receive Sh.2,000 monthly stipend.
The funds have been set aside to cushion the disabled from the effects of Covid-19 for the next three months.
North Rift National Council for Persons with Disabilities Coordinator Leonard Dawafula said that more than 100 persons from every constituency will benefit from the funds.
Speaking while launching the fund in Eldoret, Dawafula said that students from Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Baringo, Turkana, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet will receive an allocation to support the PWDs in their respective constituencies.
Dawafula said the Council is closely working with all stakeholders to identify genuine beneficiaries.
“A total of 3,229 PWDs in the region will receive the monthly stipend, the majority of them being those who lost their jobs or sources of income as a result of Covid-19 as well as students,” said Mr. Dawafula.
Each constituency will have a maximum of 100 people to benefit from the fund.
The money is part of Sh.500 million set aside by the Government to cushion PLWDs nationally and already Sh.300 M has been spent.
He explained that the Sh200 million balance is meant to support those who did not benefit from the first phase of the allocation.
Pius Asuke, the chairman for PWDs in Eldoret asked the council to to ensure that all genuine and needy cases benefit from the fund.
“This money is for the disabled persons and we expect the council to work with us to help in identifying those who deserve,” Asuke appealed.
