Parents who have special needs Children in Kakamega especially the deaf have been asked not to keep them at home but enroll them for special education at the Kakamega School for the deaf.

The institution’s headteacher David Amutabi has sent this appeal saying that some parents have decided to hide their special needs Children instead of exposing them to special education.

Amunga pointed out Ileho, Navakholo, and Malava in Kakamega County to be hot spots where such cases are common and called on the leadership in these areas to sensitize residents on the importance of education for all.

“Many parents shy away from bringing their special needs children in the public, they think it is a stigma to have such Children.

“We have some hearing-impaired children here who were brought by their Grandparents but we have never seen their own parents yet they are alive. They feel it is a shame to have such children which is a retrogressive myth.” He explained.

The headteacher said the school has accommodative facilities for the special children though not sufficient and he appealed for the government and well-wishers to come to their aid.

Currently, the school has a population of 94 hearing-impaired students.

Amutabi however lauded Education Assessment Officers who call at the school, whenever a special needs child is found in the community.

Children with special needs in this school Amutabi are not given bursaries asking Lurambi CDF to come up and give support for they are all equal.

Despite the challenge of disability, the school produced the best candidate in last year’s KCPE with 315 marks while the previous year had had 274 marks.
