South Rift teachers urged to invest early and strengthen community bonds

Teachers in the South Rift region have been advised to begin investing while still in active service rather than waiting until retirement, with psychologists warning that late planning often leaves retirees struggling financially.

David Langat, who spoke during a mentorship forum, cautioned that postponing investment decisions until after leaving employment can be counterproductive. He urged teachers to avoid extravagance, stick to their budgets, and seek professional guidance to ensure their money is used wisely.

Langat also encouraged teachers to build strong ties with the communities they serve, noting that some teachers isolate themselves during their working years and later find it difficult to reconnect after retirement. He stressed that maintaining relationships with society is as important as financial planning in securing a fulfilling life beyond the classroom.

Raising concern over the growing number of retired teachers falling into depression, Langat attributed the trend to poor financial preparation and weak social support structures. He said early investment, combined with active community engagement, could help avert such challenges.

“Proper investment and strong community relations can help teachers avoid depression and live stable lives after retirement,” he said.

Langat concluded by urging teachers to take early planning seriously, reminding them that discipline in both finances and social life is key to enjoying stability and dignity once they leave the profession.
