Students in the South Rift region have been warned against engaging in school unrest and property destruction, as incidents of indiscipline continue to rise in the area.

Kericho County Commissioner Gilbert Kitiyo issued the stern warning following a string of unrest cases reported across schools in Kericho and Bomet counties.

“We will not treat any student who destroys school property as a minor,” said Kitiyo. “They will be arrested and prosecuted just like any other criminal.”

Addressing the media in Kericho town, he urged students to express their grievances through proper channels rather than resorting to violence and arson.

“There are structures within the school management that students can use to voice their concerns. Destruction will not be tolerated,” he added.

The County Commissioner also called for the cooperation of parents, teachers, and community leaders in ensuring schools operate smoothly and safely.

“We need all stakeholders on board to protect our learning institutions. The government is committed to ensuring our schools are secure and that learning is not disrupted,” he said.

He revealed that comprehensive security measures had already been implemented in schools and confirmed that investigations had been launched into recent cases of unrest.

Incidents of student unrest have been on the rise in the region, with poor food quality, exam-related anxiety, and allegations of sexual harassment being cited as possible causes.

In recent weeks, Moi Tea Girls, Kaplong Girls, and Litein Boys High School have all reported unrest. In the most severe case yet, a fierce fire broke out early Monday morning at Koiwa Boys High School in Bomet County, destroying a dormitory that housed 113 students.

No injuries were reported, but investigations into the fire and other incidents were underway with the security department assuring that those responsible would be held accountable.
