Sotik Member of Parliament, MP Francis Sigei has sounded the alarm over a spike in defilement cases within the constituency, calling for urgent, united action to protect children and restore moral values in the community.

The legislator condemned the incidents, noting that Sotik is increasingly being associated with cases of sexual abuse involving minors.

“It is extremely shameful that we continue to witness such cases. Our constituency cannot continue making headlines for the wrong reasons,” Sigei said.

His statement follows a recent incident in which a grade five girl was reportedly assaulted by a 30-year-old man.

Describing the case as heart-breaking and unacceptable, Sigei said leaders, religious groups, youth representatives and residents must urgently convene to map solutions.

“Our community cannot stand by as our children suffer. We must sit together, reflect, and decisively tackle this vice,” he said.

With schools currently on a long holiday, the MP urges parents and guardians to be more watchful of people preying on school going children within the constituency.

He said many cases of abuse and teenage pregnancy occur during festive seasons when children are idle and social events increase.

“We do not want to start January talking about teenage pregnancies or young boys making reckless decisions like boda boda riding,” Sigei said.

“Parents must step up, guide their children, and ensure they return to school focused and safe.” He remarked.

The MP attributed rising cases of sexual offences and youth misconduct to lax parenting and eroding family discipline.

Sigei was speaking in Sotik Town after hosting a consultative meeting with local leaders to deliberate on development programmes.

He noted that ongoing projects, including the local technical training institute and the University of Kabianga campus, are expected to accelerate the town’s growth and uplift standards of living.

“As Sotik grows into a modern centre, we must also grow morally as a society. Development isn’t just about buildings and roads — it begins with protecting our children,” Sigei added
